Anita Taylor - Stitched Up Sewing

I was unemployed for almost 10 years, and as my children got older I started training in various aspects of dressmaking and needlework. This had always been something I enjoyed and had an aptitude for.

Coming for advice and support at CSV gave me the confidence to switch from "hobby" to "business" mentality, and launch Stitched Up. I was guided through the official procedures involved, and assisted in building a professional-looking website. The whole process felt far less daunting in the knowledge that informed, interested and approachable advisors were only ever a phone call away.

Stitched Up offers affordable, basic mending and alterations, as well as the creation of new items of clothing or soft furnishings. I find it just as satisfying to repair or recycle a much-loved item as it is to create something new, so try to combine both approaches in my work.

Betty Cutter - Bespoke Jewellery

I've always been creative but always looking for the "next thing to do".  So when I met a lady at a stitching show wearing a fabulous necklace I was 'hooked' before I knew it.  Consequently, I went to her beading classes and became 'obsessed' with design, colour and texture.

It was when I met a friend at Weight Watchers she suggested I go to CSV to help with making a website.  I found this service absolutely invaluable and the IT Advisor has helped me build up more knowledge of marketing my business.  Necklaces and bracelets etc can be made to compliment the colour of your wardrobe at a reasonable price and it makes you feel good too !

Barb Drummond - Historian, Publisher & Photographer

I had been a local historian for several years, with several articles published in local journals but had no idea how to go further. With the help of CSV business start up I put together a business plan to lead walks and produce books.

The walks failed to take off but I have managed to produce 6 books in just over two years, as well as being commissioned to do research for a local museum and giving several history walks and talks.

By having a business advisor, I had the confidence to run a business, and he is always there if I need to try out new ideas or discuss problems.

The computer centre is also very worthwhile as I have yet to earn enough to buy up to date equipment.

I am now looking for an agent to get a proper publisher interested, so I can move from being successful to actually making money from what I do.
