“The important thing is that I’ve been put in a position of responsibility. Being trusted at face value is important. The biggest barrier for getting into financial services is trust so having the opportunity to do it and for someone else to vouch for the fact  that I’m doing it well is important, as when I’m applying for work,  this communicates itself to potential future employers. This was my whole objective – to show that I can do it”

(Matt, Bristol)

“Volunteering allowed me to work on domestic appliances, giving me good “real-life” knowledge of what was required of electrician’s work in this area.  It also gave me good communication skills to work in a team to solve a particular problem as an electrician.  The work itself gives a good “hands-on” and practical knowledge of inspection and testing, fault finding and correction, and the approval and signing off of finished work.  The skills I’ve learnt are of great value for employability as an electrician.

(Simon, South Gloucestershire)

“It gives me something positive to do with my time. It’s given me a routine, focus, and I get to meet some great people’

(Stephen, Severn Beach)

“I initially sought a voluntary position in order to keep my skills current and to be of benefit to a charitable organisation. Being back in a working environment increased my confidence that had been somewhat depleted due to redundancy and a long period of unemployment. When I was offered a permanent job I was in the unique position of being able to wholeheartedly accept, having worked alongside my future colleagues. Without undertaking voluntary work, I would not have secured a job I absolutely love.”

(Lisa, Clevedon)

“The last 2 years have been so traumatic it’s helped me draw a line with my past and helped me to move on by giving me a new  focus and confidence….it’s sorted my life out really…I feel so  much better - it has allowed me to think that I have a future again  and a fresh start ahead.”

(Helen, Bristol)
